How to Repair IE6

The Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) Web browser by Microsoft was created as the default browser for the initial release of the Windows XP operating system. Internet Explorer has received two major updates since IE6 was released: Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) and Internet Explorer 8 (IE8). If you are experiencing issues such as crashing, freezing, or are unable to open IE6, you can attempt to repair the browser using troubleshooting methods.

Instructions

Restore the default settings for the IE6 web browser. Launch IE6 from your computer's desktop. Click on the "Tools" button and select "Internet Options" at the bottom of the "Tools" menu. Navigate to the "Advanced" tab and click the "Reset" button under the "Reset Internet Explorer settings" heading. Click "Reset" in the caution window that opens and restart IE6.

Download and reinstall the IE6 browser on your PC. Access the Microsoft IE6 download website and click the gray "Download" button. Select the "Open" option when asked what you would like to do with the file. The IE6 installer will open as soon as the file has finished downloading and walk you through the installation process. Once complete, a brand new copy of IE6 will be installed on your computer.

Update your Windows XP Service Pack. If you are running the Windows XP operating system, you can attempt to resolve IE6 problems by updating to XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Locate and click "Windows Update" under "All Programs" in the "Start" menu. Select "Express Install" and click the "Install" button to download the most recent Service Pack.

    • 4

Use the System File Checker to repair IE6. Click the "Start" button from the Windows desktop and select "Run" from the expanded menu. Type "sfc /scannow" into the empty field in the "Run" window and click the "OK" button at the bottom of the screen. System File Checker will guide you through a checkup process and alert you of anything that may be causing IE6 to malfunction.

Upgrade to the newest version of IE. If you are unable to fix the issues that you are having with IE6 by resetting the browser's settings or reinstalling it, you must upgrade to Internet Explorer 8, the latest Internet Explorer release. Access the Microsoft Download Center and click the download button to begin downloading the browser (see link in Resources). Click the "Open" button and IE8 will begin downloading. Follow the instructions given in by the Setup Wizard to complete the installation of IE8.
