Choose a color palate. When designing a sushi set, you'll want to choose colors and patterns that accent the food. Stay away from bright colors and floral patterns and opt for muted tones found in nature. Browns, greens and blues are perfect for a sushi set.

Buy set components made of porcelain or ceramic. These are traditional materials for sushi sets. High-end home goods stores such as Williams-Sonoma or Crate & Barrel will usually have a display with appropriately sized dinnerware suited for sushi sets.

Set your table in the following manner: The large bowl should be in the center of the table. This is used for serving edamame or another shared dish. The small flat plates should be in the center of each placesetting, with the small ramekin to the upper right of the plate. The chopsticks should rest to the right of the plate, under the ramekin. The small soup bowl should be placed to the left of the plate, with the spoon resting inside the bowl.
