How to Expand Wireless Internet
Expanding a wireless Internet connection can allow more devices to use it from farther distances. The signal from a wireless router has to go through many obstacles when distributing data to network users. Walls impede a signal's progress and interference from other devices can influence it as well. A wireless repeater positioned at the right location can boost the signal of your wireless Internet connection. In some cases, it can almost double the range of the original connection. Repeaters simply catch the data and repeat it at full strength again. This allows more range.
Instructions
-
Install the Repeater
-
1
Place the repeater next to the existing wireless router.
-
2
Attach the power source to the repeater. This is the only wire you need to connect to a repeater for it to function after initial setup. Some models require the antenna to be attached to the repeater. If necessary, attach the antenna by screwing it onto the appropriate connector.
-
-
3
Run an Ethernet cable from the back of the repeater to the router.
-
4
Insert the setup utility disc (included with the repeater) and follow the manufacturer's instructions. This is a one-time operation that gets the repeater started and up to speed with your network's security settings.
-
5
Remove the Ethernet cable and put it away for any potential future use. It is not necessary during normal day-to-day use.
-
6
Move the repeater to a location that will best benefit the needs of the network users. You'll need to set up the repeater in reach of the current wireless connection, but in a position so that it maximizes the range of the signal once it is rebroadcast. Analyze the devices that will be used and place the repeater in a position that makes sense.
-
7
Re-attach the power source at the new location. The repeater should power up and begin to rebroadcast the signals, expanding the network's range.
-
8
Use a wireless device to make sure the repeater is functioning. Attempt to access the Internet from a location that previously was outside the network's range.

Tips & Warnings
Models of repeaters differ in range. Estimate the furthest distance a wireless connection will be required and make sure the repeater you purchase extends the signal that far.
Security is important when using a repeater. Remember that your precious information is now being broadcast even further.
