How to Repair a Bad Sector on a Hard Drive

A hard drive with bad sectors can result in a slowdown in computer performance, read/write errors and other problems. You can find out if your hard drive has bad sectors by running a Chkdsk scan on the machine. This scan analyzes the entire hard drive and--if any bad sectors are found--repairs them for you automatically.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Command Prompt application by clicking "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and "Command Prompt."

    • 2

Type "chkdsk Z:/r" into the Command Prompt window, substituting the actual drive letter you are repairing for "Z." The drive letter is not case sensitive.

    • 3

Press the "Enter" key to perform the repair process. If the drive is currently in use, you are asked if you want to dismount it. Type "yes" and press "Enter" to confirm this.
