Turn the temperature setting on the water heater to the lowest setting.

Turn the gas control knob to the "Off" position. Let the water heater set for 20 minutes to ensure that any residual gas dissipates.

Turn the gas control knob to the "Pilot" setting.

Hold down the gas control knob and push the automatic pilot light mechanism. If the water heater does not have an auto light mechanism, insert a long wand style lighter in the hole where the pilot light is located.
