How to Install Wireless Networking Hardware on a Laptop

Some laptops do not come with wireless networking features on their motherboards. If you want to use a wireless network on your laptop, a special type of PCMCIA card, called a wireless network adapter, provides your laptop with the technology it needs to use wireless network signals. The installation process takes five minutes and does not require you to take apart your laptop.

Instructions

Insert the manufacturer's installation disk into your computer. The specific software, drivers and utilities installed varies depending on the manufacturer and the wireless network adapter model. In general, you will install the software suite and drivers by clicking "Next" until the process completes. Some driver installations require you to insert the PCMCIA wireless network card during the installation process. Follow the next steps if this is the case.

Look for the PCMCIA card slot on your laptop. The slot is usually labeled as PCMCIA but may also be called a CardBus slot.

    • 3

Open the slot cover if it has one. Insert the PCMCIA wireless network adapter. You can only install the card one way, so if it is not going in the slot, turn it over and try the other orientation. Windows should automatically detect the new card and use the installed drivers from Step 1 to automatically complete the setup.
