How do I Use Hamachi?

Perhaps you want to create a series of shared folders for other members of the house to access. Hamachi allows you to set up a secure local area network and use any application, configured normally in a LAN, over the Internet. You have access to your computer from anywhere with an Internet connection as if you were browsing through your own local home network.

Instructions

    • 1

Download (See Resources) and install Hamachi (double-click on the software icon in your "Downloads" folder from the "Desktop" if you save there instead). If Windows Firewall is enabled, click on "Unblock" in the "Windows Security Alert" dialog box.

    • 2

Open Hamachi. Click on the "Network" button in the lower-right corner of the Hamachi client. Choose "Create New Network" under the drop-down menu. Type a network name and password (recommended) in the text box. Click on the "Create" button.

    • 3

Type "hamachi join (your network name)" in the "Run" command line from the Windows "Start" menu, substituting your network name for the parenthetic expression.

    • 4

Open a port in Windows Firewall or from your router's configuration page. Turn "sharing files and folders" on from the "Network" tab in the Windows Control Panel.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can manage your Hamachi networks and clients through a free web interface. (See Resource)

  • Without opening a port to the connection, sharing files across the network may create issues.
