As with most antivirus software, you should continuously update the software through your computer's Windows Update settings, to ensure the program is able to accurately diagnose viral threats to your computer. While there are a number of antivirus software packages available for download online (most of them are available for a fee), Defender proves to be quite effective in eliminating most threats.

      Open Defender whenever your are connected to the Internet, as your computer is most vulnerable to viral infection during this time. To launch Defender, click on Start, then All Programs before clicking on the program's icon. You will then click Tools, then click Options to bring up the Administrator options. Select the Windows Defender check box (then clicking Save) will activate the program. The program will send you notifications whenever it comes across a virus or spyware.

      Run Defender system scan daily. To set this up click the Start button, then click All Programs before hitting the icon for Defender. Next, click Tools and then Options to set your scanning frequency to Automatic. You can also instruct the program to quarantine and eliminate any malicious programs it may come across.

      Ensure that Defender remains up-to-date by getting the latest software updates, or definitions. Defender will conduct sweeps of your computer to uncover any known viruses and spyware. To access its controls, you will need to open up Windows Security Center.

      Go into safe mode on your computer if the virus persists and run the Defender scan again. Furthermore, you may have to disconnect from the Internet, by turning off your wireless adapter or unplugging a network cord, before running the program again.
