Set a Maxtor 120GB drive to master and use in another computer.

If you have inherited an older Maxtor DP (DiamondMax Plus) series 120GB hard drive, or if removed one from another machine, you can install the drive as the primary (or master) drive in another PC.

Maxtor produced the DP series of Ultra ATA hard drives before Seagate bought them out in late 2005. The DP 120GB model is still a viable hard drive choice for smaller workstation computers or users that do not download many files from the Internet.

By default, the DP series of hard drives shipped with the jumper set to the "Master" setting. However, if the jumper setting was changed, it is easy to set it back to the default "Master" setting.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the jumper block on the hard drive. The jumper pins are located on the rear of the hard drive next to the Molex connector that accepts the 12-volt power plug from the power supply. If you look at the rear of the hard drive, the jumper pins are on the far right.

    • 2

Locate the plastic jumper. It should cover two of the pins in the jumper block.

    • 3

Ensure that the jumper covers the two pins farthest to the left of the jumper block. This is the "Master" position jumper settings. If the jumper covers another set of pins, remove it and cover the first two pins in the jumper block.

Tips & Warnings

  • With some smaller computer cases, you might need to remove the hard drive from the PC before setting the jumpers because they are hard to access. To do this, remove the four retaining screws from the hard drive (two on each side) and slide out of the drive bay.
