How do I Change/Upgrade a Computer Processor CPU?

Changing or upgrading the computer processing CPU is a job that can be completed in less than a half hour.       Unplug the power cord of the computer from the power supply before you upgrade the computer processor CPU. Remove the computer power supply cord from the back of the computer case by hand.

      Unfasten the screws on the back of the computer case with a screwdriver. Slide the cover off the computer case, setting the cover out of the way.

      Locate the CPU heat sink next to the black plastic fan on the computer motherboard. Flip the metal levers over on both sides of the CPU heat sink.

      Loosen the CPU heat sink by hand, moving it back and forth until you can take the part out of the motherboard. Unplug the electrical wire by hand that attaches the fan to the motherboard.

      Locate the CPU chip that sits under the heat sink, lifting the lever to unhook the CPU. Take the CPU out of the motherboard by hand.

      Place the new CPU chip in the motherboard, being careful to line the pins up correctly. Look at the CPU chip and line up the missing pins on the chip with the gap in the motherboard, lowering the lever to lock the chip into place.

      Attach the CPU heat sink over the top of the CPU chip, locking the heat sink into position by flipping the levers over and lowering them into place.

      Plug the electrical wire connector into the fan next to the heat sink. Slide the cover over the computer case, securing it with screws on the back of the case.

      Connect the computer power supply cord into the back of the computer case. Plug the power cord of the computer into the electrical outlet.
