How to Send Mail to a Group Using Gmail

Google launched Gmail on April 1, 2004 as an alternative to other webmail services such as Yahoo! and Hotmail. One of Gmail's many features is the ability to create groups and assign contacts to them; this allows users to send mass e-mails only to designated groups such as "Friends," "Family" or "Co-Workers," the three contact categories preselected by Gmail.

Instructions

  1. Add Contacts to Group

    • 1

Login to your Gmail account and select "Contacts" from the left-hand menu.

    • 2

Select a contact from the center column of the "Contacts" window.

    • 3

Click "Groups", then select the group you would like to add the contact to from the drop down menu. To create a new group, click "New Group" and enter a group name, then click "OK."

    Send E-mail to a Group

    • 4

Open a new e-mail window and compose the e-mail you would like to send.

    • 5

Click "To" (found next to the receiver's e-mail address field) and select a group from the "My Contacts" drop down menu. To send the e-mail to the entire group, select "All;" to limit the e-mail to certain people, click and highlight the name of each desired contact, then click "Done." The e-mail addresses of all selected contacts will appear in the "To" field.

    • 6

      Click "Send."

Tips & Warnings

  • You can keep your contacts' information private by entering their e-mail addresses in the blind carbon copy (Bcc) field. Click the "Add Bcc" link below the "To" field, then click "Bcc" to add select groups or contacts.
