How to Preserve Dolby Surround Sound When Ripping DVDs

How to Preserve Dolby Surround Sound When Ripping DVDs thumbnail
The Dolby brand has become the standard for DVD audio.

One of the selling points of commercially produced DVDs, along with the high-quality video, is the Dolby 5.1 or higher channel digital audio that enhances the viewing experience when the player is connected to a surround sound home theater system. DVDs can be ripped to the computer to give the user a copy to save on their hard drive. One downside is many software programs will only transfer two-channel stereo audio. By choosing the proper setting on a program capable of ripping Dolby surround sound audio, a ripped and burned DVD can have the same sound quality as its source.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a DVD ripping program that can copy Dolby multichannel audio, such as WinX DVD Ripper Platinum. While a version of this program is available for free and has "6-channel" as an audio option, the premium version must be purchased to enable that option. Select the program you wish to use. Follow the on-screen prompts to purchase, download and install the software.

    • 2

Open the software. Insert a DVD into the computer's DVD-ROM drive. Close down any default program that may open upon recognizing the DVD. The DVD will show in the WinX display window, along with a checklist of the available titles to the right.

    • 3

Click the "Copy" tab or individually set the various options, including checking the titles you want to rip (the actual movie should be at the top of the list, with the largest-number time code), video file format, and setting "English, AC3 6ch" as the audio option.

    • 4

Select the output folder to which the ripped file should be routed. Click "Start" to begin ripping the DVD, with the Dolby multichannel audio intact.

Tips & Warnings

  • Other software programs may use slightly different commands, but the concepts will remain the same. Click "Help" for more detailed operating instructions for your particular program.
