How to Upload Files Using FileZilla

FileZilla can be used to upload files to your website.

FileZilla is an extremely user-friendly yet powerful File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client. FTP clients are basically required to transfer files to a remote server from a local computer. A server is a computer that has the capability to broadcast files over the internet. All in all, an FTP client is required to transfer a file between a computer and a website without causing any hindrance in their functionality. FileZilla is used worldwide by website owners, and is perhaps one of the most well-known FTP clients. Uploading files to a website using FileZilla is rather simple.

Things You'll Need

• User id and password for your FTP account
• Your website's FTP server's name

Instructions

1. Download and install FileZilla.

2. Open FileZilla and click on the file drop-down menu. Click on "Site Manager." A new window should open.

3. Choose "New Site." A new icon will appear in the Select Entry pane.Type the name of your website in the text box provided.

4. Click the "General" tab in the pane available on the right side of the Select Entry pane. Enter the host name in the format of "ftp.your-domain-name.com." Select your FTP Server Type. Select the type of login you have access to, which is generally normal.

5. Enter your username and password and click "Connect." This should close your Site Manager automatically, and the commands required to log in will appear in the top pane of the main window.

6. Access the directory that you wish to upload your files to. To do so, simply double-click the file's name in the folder portion of the Remote Site pane.

7. Navigate to the file that is to be uploaded using the Local Site pane.

8. Double-click on the file to begin uploading it to your website. Alternately, drag and drop the file from the left to the right window pane. The upload progress can be monitored at the window pane given at the bottom in Filezilla.

9. Disconnect from your website once the file has been uploaded by accessing the "Server" menu and then "Disconnect."

Tips & Warnings

• Access a browser on your computer and type in the address of your website to test your uploads.

• If you are having trouble establishing a connection with Filezilla, access Internet Explorer and choose "Tools," "Internet options," then "Advanced." In this tab, make sure that the "Use Passive FTP" choice is not checked.
