A Linksys router may be connected into an existing wired network.

A wireless router may be added to augment an existing wired network. To keep the naming conventions the same across all network equipment, it is often simplest to upgrade a network with the same brand of networking equipment. Therefore, when adding a new router to a network with Linksys branded hubs and switches, many users will choose to purchase a Linksys router.

Adding a wireless router to an existing cable Internet network requires that the router software is set up, and that the router is plugged into an existing hub or switch.

Things You'll Need

  • Cable modem with working Internet service
  • Linksys Ethernet switch or hub
  • Linksys wireless router
  • Computer with wired network adapter
  • Three Ethernet cables (Category 5, 5e, or 6)

Instructions

    • 1

Plug one end of the first Ethernet cable into the cable modem "Computer" port. Plug the other end of this cable into the "Uplink" port on the Ethernet switch or hub. If the Ethernet switch or hub lacks an "Uplink" port (as some older models do), plug the cable into Port 1.

    • 2

Plug one end of the second Ethernet cable into Port 2 on the Ethernet hub or switch. Plug the other end of this cable into the "Internet" port on the wireless router.

    • 3

Plug one end of the third Ethernet cable into Port 2 on the router. Plug the other end of this Ethernet cable into the network adapter on the computer.

    • 4

Open a Web browser window, type "http://192.168.1.1" (without quotation marks) into the address bar, and press "Enter." When prompted for the router username and password, enter the word "admin" (without quotation marks) into both fields, and press "Enter."

    • 5

Click the "Security" tab on the Setup menu. Select "WPA" from the "Security Mode" dropdown box. Choose a network password, and type it into the "Passphrase" box. Click "Save Settings," then click "Continue." Write this password down and save it in a secure place. Close the Web browser window; the router is now set up for wireless network connections.
