How to Unzip a File in Windows XP

Zipped files are files that have been compressed to a smaller size so that they use less hard drive space and are quicker to transfer between computers. To access the documents inside of the ZIP file, you must first unzip the file. Unzipping the file allows you to save each of the files in an uncompressed format. Windows XP includes a built-in utility that allows you to open ZIP files in a way that is similar to opening typical files and folders.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" menu, then "My Computer," and locate the file you want to unzip.

    • 2

Right-click on the file, then click "Extract All." This opens the "Extraction Wizard."

    • 3

Specify a location to save the extracted files in the "Extraction Wizard" window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Delete the ZIP file after the files have been extracted by right-clicking on the file, then selecting "Delete."

  • Password-protected files are no longer protected after they are extracted from the ZIP file.
