How to Teach Yourself 10 Key Adding Machine thumbnail
Speed is calculated into keystrokes per hour, or KPH, for 10 key adding machines.

Using a 10-key adding machine for the first time will make you feel like you have no control of your fingers. Similar to typing, you will learn the skill through practice. People who use 10 key are measured by the accuracy rate and the speed of their typing. Learning to use a 10 key adding machine requires regular practice, but once you learn the skill, you can quickly pick it back up, even if you do not use a 10 key adding machine for a few years.

Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the keypad. Place your three middle fingers on the 4, 5 and 6 keys. This is your starting position for your fingers. From this position, your three fingers will move up, down and sideways to hit the other keys. Practice moving your fingers to other keys prior to attempting real training.

Open your phone book to any page. Begin entering the numbers you see. The first time you enter the numbers, enter as you see them. The second time, use the addition key as a substitution for the "-" in the phone number. Continue but substitute the multiplication key, the division key, the percentage key and any other key you need additional practice on. End each number sequence by using the "=" key. Avoid looking at your hand and the keys as much as possible.

Visit learn2type.com (see Resources). Use the 10 key pad on your keyboard for this exercise. On computer keyboards, 10 key pads have the same basic layout as 10 key adding machines. Begin typing the number sequences as shown and hit "Enter" when directed. This will show you your errors and your KPH (keystrokes per hour), and it can help you track your progress.

Open your word program and create a document full of numbers, addition and subtraction. Print the document and use it to type the numbers into your adding machine. Use fresh numbers to avoid getting used to a certain patterns.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you find the method that is easiest for you to practice and learn, continue with that method until your speed increases.
