How to Merge PDF Files in Adobe Reader

According to the Adobe website, Adobe Reader does not offer the tools needed to merge multiple PDF files into one. Most programs that can merge files into a single PDF must be purchased, but a few free programs are available that can do the job. Once the files have been merged, you can open and read the single, merged PDF file in Adobe Reader, just as you would any standard PDF.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install PDFsam to your computer. A download of the free basic version of PDFsam can be found at the Softonic website (see Resources). PDFsam can both split PDF documents into many files, or merge many PDFs into one.

    • 2

Get the MergePDF application from the Kioskea page (see Resources). MergePDF provides all of the tools needed to upload and merge PDF files in a one-screen system.

    • 3

Install Easy PDF Merger to your system. The free Easy PDF Merger can be downloaded at the Brothersoft software website (see Resources). Free PDF Merger has only one function, merging multiple PDFs into a single file for use in Adobe Reader.

    • 4

Choose the Advanced PDF Merger if you want to have more customization options when it comes to merging your PDF files. The tools provided in Advanced PDF Merger allow you to not just merge entire files, but to set up parameters so that you can extract only sections of each file and merge only those sections into one PDF file.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may need to require an up-to-date version of Adobe Reader in order to read the files created in merged applications. The product descriptions for Easy PDF Merger and Advanced PDF Merger, for instance, state that the product works only with Adobe Reader 7 or higher.
