How to Set Up Workstations

How to Set Up Workstations thumbnail
Setting up a workstation requires proper placement of the equipment.

Workstations that are set up in a home or corporate office should be as ergonomic as possible. This will help to alleviate problems that can occur from poor posture, such as a sore back and stiff neck muscles. In order to properly set up a workstation, you will need to know how to organize the equipment that will be used. This will require learning how an ergonomic workstation needs to be put together.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the placement of the monitor by first sitting in the chair, at your desk, like you are preparing to use or work on the computer. Outstretch your arms out in front of you and note the location of the knuckles on your hands. This is where the monitor should be located.

    • 2

Find a suitable position for the keyboard. Set the keyboard near the front of the monitor so that it is in front of you. It should not be placed on one side or the other where you will need to bend to reach it. Set the keyboard tray, if one is used, in a flat or slightly sloped position for natural comfort.

    • 3

Set the arm rests or supports on your desk chair. Raise or lower the arm rests on the chair so that your arms are slightly higher than the keyboard tray. This will keep your shoulders from being lifting or drooping when using the keyboard.

    • 4

Determine the placement of books on the desk of the workstation. Place books on the desk where you can reach them with minimal forward strain. Place a document holder, if one is used, near the monitor so that it is at the same distance to reduce eye strain.

    • 5

Place the phone within easy reach on the desk. Set the phone so that you can pick it up with your non-writing hand, allowing yourself to take notes. Alternatively, you can use a headset with the phone, to avoid picking it up and cradling it against your neck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tilt the monitor so that it faces your eyes so you are not bending your neck up or down to see the screen.

  • Place the mouse to the right or left of the keyboard, as close to the front edge as possible.
