Foreign nationals need work permits to work legally in Malaysia. Prospective employers apply for the permits. They must submit documentation to justify the need to hire a foreigner over a local. You need to supply your prospective employer in Malaysia with certain documents before the employer can apply for your work permit.

      Photocopy your passport. You must provide copies of your passport, showing your details and nationality information.

      Copy all of your relevant academic qualifications. Any certificates and resume information you have should be photocopied and submitted to the employer in Malaysia.

      Obtain reference letters from from employers. These will also be submitted by the employer to justify your employment.

      Take a passport size photograph to accompany your work permit application. Use a blank whit or cream background and don't wear sunglasses. It is a good idea to include a few copies in case one gets lost.

      Undergo a medical examination. You may need to provide a medical certificate verifying your health. It should be signed, dated and stamped by your local physician.

      Submit all documents and photographs to your prospective employer in Malaysia. The employer will submit your information, along with additional required documentation, to the Malaysian immigration department.

  • If a Malaysian company asks you to apply for the work permit yourself, you can assume the offer of employment is fake. Always deal with the employer directly rather than an agent who may charge you money for services the employer must carry out anyway.
