Though computers can make complicated calculations in a blink of the eye and can store more information than the smartest person alive, a computer with a slow Internet connection can make it seem like a worthless piece of junk. Slow Internet connection rates are usually indicative of problems outside of the computer's architecture and can be readily corrected. Knowing what can reduce your Internet speed can help you to amend your computer's performance and can speed up your trips through cyberspace.

Step 1

Run multiple programs simultaneously. Programs that are running in the background while you are sending and receiving information via the Internet will tax the computer's processor and affect the speed of the Internet connection. Closing unused and unnecessary programs will speed up the connection.

Step 2

Open multiple browsers and multiple windows in those browsers. If you have different browsers open, then they will be vying for the limited transfer rate of your Internet connection. Also, opening pages that constantly refresh themselves will further slow down your connection.

Step 3

Download a variety of media at the same time. Downloads tend to dominate the Internet transfers, and downloading files, music and video at the same time is a good way to slow your Internet rate to a crawl.

Step 4

Move your computer out of range if it uses Wi-Fi. A weak Wi-Fi connection will result in the slow Internet. The connection will be intermittent and will cause your computer to load web pages and other data in short bursts.

Step 5

Add another computer to the network. When using either Wi-Fi or a modem, multiple users will slow the Internet connection since they will start to share the limited amount of transfer rates. More users means more work and less speed.
