How to Install Adobe Reader RPM in Ubuntu

The Adobe Reader is the official freeware program for viewing Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF files are created with Adobe Acrobat Professional as a document format designed for distribution. Many ebooks and user documentation distributed online are now distributed in PDF, as PDF documents retain their formatting and style and are difficult to change without authorization. If you want to install Adobe Reader on a Ubuntu Linux installation, the process is very similar to installing other applications and can be achieved through the Terminal.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "System," then "Administration," then "Software Sources." Make sure that "Community maintained Open Source software" and "Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse)" are both enabled. Click "Close" to save changes.

    • 2

Click "Applications," then "Accessories," then "Terminal."

    • 3

Type "sudo apt-get install acroread" and press "Enter" on your keyboard. This tool will automatically download the latest Adobe Reader RPM build and install the application for you. The "sudo" command resets the file path to the main path in Linux.

Type "sudo apt-get install acroread mozilla-acroread acroread-plugins" instead if you want to install Adobe Reader and the additional plug-ins for your Mozilla browser. Press "Enter" to begin the download and installation.

Close Terminal once installation is complete. Adobe Reader RPM is now installed on your Ubuntu machine.
