How to Troubleshoot a D-Link Router & DSL Modem

Internet modems and routers give you Internet access to multiple computers within your household. This may be great for your needs, but sometimes things just don’t work. While most of the time problems that occur are simple to diagnose and solve, others may take a little more digging and troubleshooting.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the power. Make sure that both your DSL modem and D-Link router are connected to a power source, are turned on and are lit up.

    • 2

Check the connections. The most common problem is that the connections are missing. Check your DSL modem and make sure that your Internet line is securely connected and that the outgoing Ethernet cable is securely connected. Check your modem to make sure that the incoming Ethernet line is securely connected and any other outgoing Ethernet lines are securely connected. If the cables do not click into place, then they are not securely connected.

Check the Internet status or your modem. There should be an “Internet” light that lights up to confirm that the device is connected to the Internet. If that light is not lit up, you are not connected to the Internet. Call your Internet service provider to troubleshoot any problems that may be on their end.

Check the Internet status of your router. Just as there is an “Internet” light on your modem, there will be one on your router. If it is not lit up, but the light on your modem is, then somewhere along the way the connection is being lost. Make sure the cables are secure and try replacing the cables to make sure they are working.

    • 5

Update your modem and routers firmware. Periodically, firmware updates will be released to fix bugs and add new features. Sometimes these updates render older versions nonfunctional. Look up your modem and routers specific model number on the manufacturers website to determine if a newer firmware is available.

Try other devices. If all of the lights are lit up indicating that you should be getting a connection, try connecting other devices such as another computer, laptop or video game device. If other devices work, then you know the problem lies with your computer, and not with your modem or router.
