Taking notes can help with studying for the PMP exam.

The Project Management Professional (PMP) exam is a project management certification that is offered by the Project Management Institute and is accredited with ISO standards. It is a 200 question exam that must be completed during a four hour time frame. The PMP can be a difficult test, so studying effectively can be very helpful. Passing the test provides a project manager with the potential for better job opportunities, higher pay, and more respect from fellow project managers.

  1. Study for the PMP

    • 1

Check to see if you are eligible to sit for the exam. The requirements include a four year degree, 4,500 hours of project management experience, as well as 35 hours of Project Management education.

    • 2

Apply to take the test at the Project Management Institute website (www.pmi.org) and schedule the exam for three months out. Having a target date for the test can help motivate you to study. You should allocate at least 3 hours per week to studying for the exam.

    • 3

To begin studying, review the following books: "A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)" and "Project Management Professional (PMP) Credential Handbook." Make sure to obtain the current editions. Read through both books at least twice, while taking notes. Listen to the PMP Prepcast and take notes. Consider joining a PMP study group or taking a class to help prepare for the exam.

    • 4

Practice the drill questions in the "PMP Credential Handbook" and the sample questions provided by the Project Management Institute. Take and pass at least two practice exams.

    • 5

The day before the test, read over the materials again. Be sure to get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast before the test. Show up early for the examination.

    • 6

If you do not pass on the first attempt, the Project Management Institute allows you to attempt the test twice more in the space of a year.
