How to Work With Two Word Windows Together

How to Work With Two Word Windows Together thumbnail
You can work with Word in separate windows.

While writing or working on documents, it often becomes useful to be able to view two Microsoft Word documents in separate windows, side by side, to compare them, or to transfer or copy items from one document to the other. Several methods are available for doing exactly that, including Word itself, Windows 7 and a separate software program.

Instructions

  1. Word 2003

    • 1

Use Microsoft Word 2003 and later versions that have a feature that allows you to look at two documents side by side, without toggling back and forth. Open the two documents, then click "Windows," then "Compare Side by Side with," filling in the name of the document. Then click "View Side by Side."

    • 2

Choose the document that you want to compare it with, then click "OK."

    • 3

The first document opens on the left side of the screen and the second one on the right. You can even scroll them simultaneously by clicking the "View" tab. "Synchronous Scrolling" is shown as automatically selected; click it to turn it off or on again.

    Windows 7

    • 4

Try Windows 7, the latest upgrade of Microsoft Windows, whose new features include the ability to show two or more windows side by side, or one above the other, for Word documents, websites and other applications.

    • 5

Right-click an empty space in the taskbar, and a drop-down menu will appear. Click "Show windows side by side" to get one window on each side of the screen, or click "Show windows stacked" for one window to appear above the other. Once your windows are placed, you can switch them by moving each title bar, or change the size by dragging the corners.

    • 6

View the windows in their original size by clicking the "Maximize" box at the top right of the window. To restore the windows, position your cursor over the title bar of one window and drag it away from the edge of the screen. Do the same with the other window.

    WinSplit Revolution

    • 7

Use a small, free program called WinSplit Revolution if your computer is running Vista, XP, 2000 or WinMe.

    • 8

Download WinSplit Revolution, then click the blue icon that appears in your system tray. A popup appears allowing you to choose the windows you want to move and where you want to send them.

    • 9

Show as many as eight windows on your monitor at the same time with this program. The windows can also be directed by using the numeric keypad.
