How to Reduce Laptop Fan Speed
Laptops are seeing ever increasing use today in both the professional and private worlds, because they provide easy access to a variety of activities such as studying, work and taking care of chores such as grocery shopping and paying credit card bills. A laptop fan might be running loudly, causing unhealthy vibrations or simply not working, leading the owner to want to slow it down. Doing so is simple.

How to Reduce Laptop Fan Speed
-
1
Check in your computer's BIOS when you first start the computer, to see if you can change the fan speed there. This procedure depends on the make and model of the laptop, and many will not have it available. The BIOS is accessible by pressing "F2," "Delete" or "F10" during startup (depending on the manufacturer), which will bring up the BIOS menu. You can navigate to the hardware tab and see if fan options are available. Finalize changes by pressing "Save."

2
Check if the chipset driver for your computer controls the fan that is in your laptop. The chipset on the motherboard is what controls various hardware components such as fans, hard drives, network adapters, audio and video controllers. The chipset drivers allow you to change the settings on the hardware the chipset controls.
You can access these by going to "Start," then "Program Files," and then selecting the folder that has the name of your motherboard. There will be a diagnostic/options program in there, which will have settings to change. If the fan speed can be changed in this program, it will be immediately visible or be visible in the hardware section of the settings. If you need extra help, consult your motherboard's user manual.

Download software to change your fan speed if you cannot change it through the BIOS or through the chipset. There are a variety of programs that do this, such as "Speedfan," "RivaTuner" and "CoreTemp." (See Resources.) Before buying or downloading any software, ensure that it is compatible with your hardware and operating system so you don't waste time and money. If it is, download the software.

4
Follow the program's instructions carefully. Often you can find a guide in the help or in a tutorial files of various software explaining the safe way to change your hardware settings without hurting your computer. You can void your warranty by modifying hardware through non-factory-installed software, so be careful. To reduce fan speed, find an option to reduce the "RPMs" on the fan, which is the rotations per minute.
