How Do I Shift a 1990 Jeep From 4WD to 2WD?

Shifting your Jeep from 4WD to 2WD is a simple process; but if you are traveling too fast or do not use the correct procedure, you will damage the gear sets and other internal parts inside the transfer case. If you are using 4WD, shifting back to 2WD from high range can be done on the fly; but if you are in low range, you will need to stop the Jeep to shift it properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the brakes to bring your Jeep to a complete stop and push the transfer case shifter forward from 4LO to 4HI. Continue traveling in 4HI or shift the Jeep into 2WD.

    • 2

Slow down to 50 miles per hour or less in your Jeep then lift your foot off the accelerator briefly. The transfer case should not be shifted under power.

    • 3

Grasp the shifter and smoothly push it out of 4WD, passing it trough the neutral position. Continue pushing the shifter until it is in the 2WD position on the gear indicator mounted beside the shifter.

    • 4

Accelerate to your normal driving speed and continue traveling to your destination.
