How to Test Internet Providers

How to Test Internet Providers thumbnail
Put your Internet connection to the test.

If you live in an area with several Internet providers competing for your business, you want to make sure you're getting the most from your current provider. A savvy way to ensure you're getting the most bang for your buck is to use an online Internet service testing tool. Testing your Internet service is free and easy, and will help you determine whether you're receiving the speed advertised by your provider.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a Web browser to access an online Internet speed testing tool. Speedtest, Speakeasy and CNET are among the most popular tools. Select the closest server location to you, if the tool you use requests a location selection.

    • 2

Perform the speed test. The speed testing tool will analyze three main parameters: download speed, upload speed, and latency or "ping." Each of these parameters indicates how fast data is received or transmitted using your Internet connection. Depending on your Internet connection type, the speed test may take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes to complete.

    • 3

Write down your speed test results for future reference. Check the results of your speed test against the advertised connection speeds for your Internet service. Contact your ISP if you believe you have a severe Internet connection or speed issue.

Tips & Warnings

  • For best results, perform your speed test on a computer that's wired directly to your Internet connection. Wireless connections are more susceptible to signal interference and slow speeds, so they may not be an accurate representation of your Internet service.

  • Check the connections to your modem, router and any other equipment you use to receive or transmit Internet service. A loose wire may be to blame for reduced speed.

  • Test at different times of day, or over the span of a few days to help figure out what your Internet connection speed average is.

  • Shut down any other Internet connections on your network before conducting your speed test. Computers, video game equipment and other devices throughout your home may skew your test results if they're in use while your test is being performed.

  • Speed test results that are significantly lower than the service advertised by your provider can indicate signal loss. Contact your ISP if your test results constantly reveal slow speeds.
