The Best Way to Become a Fighter Pilot thumbnail
The fighter pilot selection process is highly rigorous.

The fighter pilot group is an elite specialty in the armed forces, with a rigorous selection process. Aspiring pilots have three U.S. military branches from which to choose when considering pilot training programs. Only candidates with advanced academic and physical aptitude, as well as leadership ability, will receive the prestigious fighter pilot assignments.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a military branch. The Air Force, Navy and Marines each have a fighter pilot division. Speak with a recruiter from each branch to find out which program is the best fit for your background.

    • 2

Meet the physical qualification requirements. Pilots for every military branch must meet stringent physical fitness requirements. Also, pilots must have excellent visual acuity and meet height standards to sit comfortably in the aircraft. Consult with your recruiter about up-to-date requirements for the military branch you are interested in.

    • 3

Pursue a bachelor's degree. Fighter pilot candidates must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university. The military provides financial assistance for college students.

    • 4

Become an officer. Naval aviator candidates can apply to Officer Candidates School (OCS), a six-week course, before attending flight school. Marines attend a ten-week OCS. The Air Force requires 12 weeks of officer training.

    • 5

Enter a military aviation program. Select candidates enter a flight training program that begins with basic aviation and flight rules. Later, the training becomes more advanced and focused on the aircraft and military mission objectives.

Tips & Warnings

  • Prepare a back-up plan in the event that you are not assigned to an aviation unit. The selection process to apply and complete aviation training is incredibly difficult.

  • Maintain a high grade point average while you are in school. Low grades will negatively impact your application for military aviation training.
