Those using a computer with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system may have noticed that Microsoft's IIS web server is not included. This application, which is present on Windows XP Professional, allows you to create a home web server for website hosting. If you'd like to install IIS on your Windows XP Home machine, you can do so with a work-around. By editing a system file and copying some files from a Windows 2000 installation disc, you can install IIS on your Windows XP Home computer.

  1. Editing the SYSOC.INF file

      Open Notepad by clicking "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and selecting "Notepad."

      Click "File," "Open" and browse to the C:\WINDOWS\INF folder. Select the file called "SYSOC.INF" and click "Open."

      Scroll down until you locate the line that says "iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,hide,7". Delete that line and replace it with "iis=iis2.dll,OcEntry,iis2.inf,,7".

    Copying and Expanding Installation Files From Your Windows 2000 Disc

      Insert the Windows 2000 disc into your CD-ROM drive.

      Open My Computer by clicking "Start" and selecting "My Computer."

      Double-click on your CD-ROM drive and navigate to the E:\I386\ folder. Select both the "iis.dl_" and "iis.in_" files and copy them to a folder on your hard drive.

      Click "Start" and select "Run." Type "cmd" and press "Enter." This will open the Command Prompt.

      Type "CD," leave a space and then type the location where you copied your Windows 2000 files to. For example, if you copied them to "c:\iisfiles," you'd type "CD c:\iisfiles".

      Use the command "expand iis.dl_ iis2.dll" and press the Enter button. Type "expand iis.in_ iis2.inf" and press "Enter" once more. Exit the command prompt.

      Move the "iis2.inf" file to C:\Windows\INF and the "iis2.dll" file to C:\Windows\System32\Setup.

      Open the Control Panel by clicking "Start" and selecting "Control Panel."

      Double-click "Add or Remove Programs" and choose "Add/Remove Windows Components" from the list on the left.

      Check the box labeled "IIS" and click "OK."
