How to Set a Bike Tire Size in a Computer

Bicycle computers can increase fun and performance for beginning and experienced cyclists. At a minimum, your bicycle computer tells you how fast you are riding and how far you have gone. Some offer additional features, such as average speed, maximum speed, calories burned, heart rate and air temperature. Most of the time you can just follow the computer manufacturer's instructions and input the size of your tire, listed on its sidewall, using a code. If this is not possible or you desire greater accuracy, use the roll-out method to set up tire size in your bicycle computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark a spot on the floor. While computer maker CatEye suggests using a marker, you can also use a piece of tape.

    • 2

Line up the valve stem of your front bicycle tire with the mark on the floor.

    • 3

Move the bicycle forward so that the front wheel completes exactly one revolution. Make another mark on the floor even with the valve stem.

    • 4

Measure the space between the two marks with a tape measure. Write down the result. Use centimeters for computers that ask for three digits and millimeters for computers that require a four-digit input. To convert inches to centimeters, multiply your result in inches by 2.54. To convert inches to millimeters, multiply your result in inches by 25.4.

    • 5

Input the result in your computer at the prompt that requests wheel circumference. Exactly how to do this varies by computer--and there are plenty of models out there. However, you generally push a button to scroll through options such as date, time and mph/kmh before you get to the wheel circumference selection.

Tips & Warnings

  • For pinpoint accuracy, keep your tire's air pressure where you normally would when riding your bike. Simulating riding conditions ensures that the number you come up with for wheel circumstance matches what it will be on the road.
