Connect the DSL modem to the WRT54G using an Ethernet cable.

The Linksys WRT54G is a wireless router that allows several computer systems to share one broadband Internet connection. The router accepts data requests from computers connected to the router, and forwards these requests to the broadband modem. Once the data is obtained from the Internet, the WRT54G receives the data and forwards it to the requesting computer.

To connect the WRT54G to a DSL modem, an Ethernet patch cable is required. To test the connection, you must connect a computer to the WRT54G and attempt to access an Internet site.

Things You'll Need

  • DSL modem with working Internet service
  • Two Ethernet patch cables (Category 5, 5e, or 6)
  • Computer with installed wired network adapter

Plug one end of the second Ethernet cable into Port 2 on the WRT54G. Plug the other end of this cable into the computer network adapter.

Open a Web browser window on the computer. Type the address of a website, such as http://www.msn.com, into the web browser address bar, and press "Enter." If the website does not come up within one minute, check the Ethernet cable connections to ensure that they are snug.
