Army medical assistants are part of the Army Medical Specialist Corps. In the Army, medical assistants are referred to as physician's assistants. Medical assistants are officers in the Army, so to receive military medical training, an applicant must qualify for an officer appointment. Medical assistants in the Army generally have a greater level of responsibility than civilian medical assistants. There are a wide variety of options for a medical assistant career, from working in a military hospital overseas to taking care of wounded soldiers back home.

      Contact a local Army recruiter.

      Qualify for medical assistant training. To qualify, an applicant must be on active duty or enlisted in the Army Reserve, score at least 110 on the General Technical section of the ASVAB test, pass a physical fitness test, and complete at least 60 hours of college credit.

      Take the Officer Basic Course in San Antonio, TX. Medical officers take this course instead of traditional Army basic training. Once the course is complete, students continue on to medical training.

      Complete the Interservice Physician Assistant Program. This training program is two years, and at its completion students will have have a master's degree and be eligible to pass the certification exam.

      Pass the certification test. The test is offered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. The test has 360 multiple choice questions.
