How to Find the GPO Grant Number

How to Find the GPO Grant Number thumbnail
The U.S. government gives out billions in grant dollars every year.

The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) prints the hard-copy version of the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA), a compendium of all grant activities of the federal government. Each grant has a CFDA grant number which can be found in the print version of the catalog, or by searching an online version.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit Grants.gov. This is the federal government's central website for all grant-related information. Click on "Find Grant Opportunities" to begin a search.

    • 2

Use the grant search tools to locate the grant you're looking for. You can search by keyword topics, by agency, by general category or by specific programs, such as Recovery Act grants. Use the search tools that are the best fit for the information you have at hand.

    • 3

Locate the CFDA number. When you find a grant of interest, click on the link to bring up a page with the full description of the grant program. The page will include the CFDA grant number, which generally looks like a decimal number, e.g., 98.001.

The grants page will also have a more complicated number, the Funding Opportunity Number, which looks like this: M-OAA-EGAT-DHWA-0802.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can order a hard copy of the CFDA from GPO--see the link in Resources.
