How to Replace the RAM in an Asus Eee PC

How to Replace the RAM in an Asus Eee PC thumbnail
The process of upgrading the RAM of your Eee PC is fairly similar among different models.

The Eee PC line is a line of netbooks manufactured by Asus. While InternetMarketingFool.com commends the Eee PC line for their capabilities, many come with either 512MB or 1GB of RAM. While this amount of RAM may be sufficient at first, the more programs you install, the more you'll notice how little memory you actually have. Most Eee PCs can be upgraded easily to 2GB of RAM. Upgrading the RAM in your Asus netbook will not void its warranty.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the PC

    • 1

Turn your Eee PC off and remove any cords attached to the netbook. Close the lid and flip the computer over so the underside is facing upward.

    • 2

Remove the battery by sliding it off with a bit of force, or pressing the release button, depending on the model.

    • 3

Unscrew the screws holding the memory access hatch and remove it. The hatch's location differs among different Eee PC models; consult your manual for the exact location of the memory access hatch on your model. Set the screws and hatch aside in a secure location.

    Replace the RAM

    • 4

Locate the RAM you're going to replace and press down on the two latches on either side of the RAM stick to eject it. Pull the RAM out gently at the angle it's resting at and set it aside to reinstall in case the upgrade doesn't work.

    • 5

Place the new RAM directly into the slot facing the same direction of the old one, at the same angle. Gently press down on the other side to hear and/or see the RAM module lock into place.

    • 6

Return the memory access hatch to its rightful place and screw it back in. Re-attach the battery before flipping the Eee PC over and powering it up.

    • 7

On the first screen, hit "F2" quickly to enter setup. Review the changes under the memory section of the setup page and press "F10" to save settings and exit setup.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consult your user manual to find out your exact model number and the type of RAM you need. Purchase the correct type of RAM either online or from an electronics store.

  • Static electricity can seriously harm the internal components of your Eee PC; ground yourself by touching something metal in between each step to greatly reduce the chance of this problem occurring.
