How to Get a Landscaping License

How to Get a Landscaping License thumbnail
You may be required to be licensed if you install landscapes.

Though not required for every position, landscape licensure is an important part of running a landscaping business. Some states, such as Oregon, require anyone who is a "landscape construction professional" to obtain a license, while other states, such as Michigan, require only certain landscape positions to obtain a license (Michigan requires Landscape Architects to be licensed). In order to become licensed, professionals must meet certain qualifications and pay the necessary fees.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the licensure board of your state and city to verify what licenses you need for the services you perform. Each state and most cities vary on their license requirements. Find information on the required examination as well, such as application deadlines, schedule and locations of exam.

    • 2

Meet the requirements of your state. Most states require a certain number of years of education and/or experience as a professional landscaper; some require a surety bond or some form of surety.

    • 3

Register for and take the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E.) or the required exam for your position in your state.

    • 4

Pay the fee associated with the application and license.
