How to Do an IP Search by Email
You can find someone's Internet protocol (IP) address from his email. Once you have the IP address, you can trace the location of the person's Internet Service Provider and get information about who sent the email and where the email came from. Doing an IP search by email means doing a search of the information that came along with the email to determine the IP address of the sender.

1
Open the email headers that came with the email. These are listed under "headers" or under "show more" or "more" or "display more." Sometimes, they will appear automatically under the "To" section of the email.
-
2
Scroll through the pieces of information in the headers. Information includes sending date and time, the time and date the email was received and the server path the email took. Keep reading until you find "IP Address" and copy that down.

3
Continue to read. If you see another instance where "IP Address" appears, and it is different from the first IP address listed, cross out the first one and use the second one instead. Always use the last IP address listed, because that is the one that is hardest to change using software.
-
4
Plug the IP address into an IP address locator (see Resources). The locator will return information about what ISP sent the message.
