The Media Access Control, or MAC, address identifies the IP address for a particular computer. You can find the MAC address for computers running on a Windows and Linux operating system. A ping is quick test to make sure your computer's Internet connection is working and valid, regardless if it's a wired or wireless connection.

Instructions

  1. Windows

    • 1

      Click the "Start" button in the bottom left corner of the desktop.

      Type "cmd" in the search box and then press "Enter" on your keyboard. A black screen will appear.

      Type "ipconfig" after the "C:\" prompt.

    • 4

      Hit "Enter" on your keyboard. The MAC address is the 12-digit "Physical Address."

    Linux

    • 5

      Open the "su" command.

    • 6

      Type "ifconfig -a" on the screen after the "#" prompt.

    • 7

      Hit "Enter" on your computer's keyboard. The MAC address is the HWaddr listed on the first line.
