How Become a Title Insurance Agent in Missouri

You must pass the state exam to become a title insurance agent.

Beginning a career in the insurance industry requires time, dedication and a willingness to continually further your education. If you wish to pursue a career as a Missouri insurance agent, and also have a passion for real estate, a title insurance producer's license may be appropriate. Title agents provide coverage for the legitimate transfer of real estate ownership, protecting the buyer and lender from losing money if a legitimate claim to the property is discovered after the sale.

Instructions

1. Complete the NAIC Uniform Application for Individual Producer License. All prospective insurance agents, regardless of the actual line of insurance, must provide personal information to the state's insurance department, including answers to questions that identify potential conflicts of interest and poor moral character. Many states, including Missouri, adapted their process to utilize the National Insurance Producer Registry and their universal agent application. By visiting the NIPR website, the paperwork can be completed and submitted electronically. However, paper applications are still available.

2. Learn relevant Missouri insurance regulations. Missouri's Department of Insurance requires prospective title insurance agents to complete relevant pre-licensing education. Participation in an in-person classroom course is not required, and the amount of material to cover is minimal compared to other lines of insurance. Self-study materials downloaded from the state's insurance department website, or purchased from an approved vendor greatly, greatly improve the chances of adequately learning the material.

3. Pass the Missouri Insurance Department producer's exam. Contact Pearson Vue to discuss and schedule the title insurance producer's test. A score of only seventy percent qualifies candidates to receive a valid producer's license.

The benefit of learning material from an experienced agent and educator far outweighs the time and cost of the course.
