When sterling silver is over-plated with a thin layer of gold, it is known as vermeil. The gold plating is generally 22 carat gold that, in time, will become dull and may wear off. It is important to be gentle when cleaning 22-carat vermeil so that the plating doesn't get scraped off or scratched.       Place four or five drops of gentle dishwashing liquid in a small bowl.

      Add lukewarm water to the bowl.

      Drop the vermeil into the sudsy water and use a soft brush, such as a baby's toothbrush, to gently wash the piece. If it contains stones, be sure to get the soapy water into all the crevices around the stone.

      Rinse the vermeil in clear, lukewarm water and dry immediately to avoid water spots. Use a soft cloth to dry the piece.
