Losing your Microsoft Office CD key can be a frustrating experience.

It is impossible to install any legitimate version of Microsoft Office without a unique CD key. If you need to reinstall your copy of Microsoft Office but have lost your CD key, you can recover the product key from where it is encoded in the system registry. There are a number of programs that can recover the CD keys for different versions of Microsoft Office from the Windows system registry.

      Use ProduKey to recover the CD key for Microsoft Office 2010, 2007, or 2003. Download the program file from the company's website and run it. You do not have to perform any installation of the software for it to work. Locate the program you want the CD key for in the list of software. Write down the entries from the "Product ID' and "Product Key" columns. Place the numbers in a safe place with your installation CD.

      Try WinKey Finder if you need to recover a CD key for Microsoft Office 2007, 2003, XP, or 97. Run the program immediately after download. Click the button that says "MS Office" on the left side of the screen to view the Office CD key. Choose the "Copy" button under the serial number, and paste this number into a file. Save the file to a secure location on your computer.

      Download RockXP to recover a Microsoft Office 2007, 2003, XP, 2000 SP2, or 97 product key. Run the program and select the "Windows key" tab. Choose the program you want to locate the key for in the "Software" drop-down menu. Write down the numbers that appear in the "Product key" and "Serial number" boxes. Store the numbers you write down in a safe location.

Tips & Warnings

  • These programs can only recover legitimate CD keys that were used to install Microsoft Office. They will not generate CD keys or aid in illegal software installations.
