How to Make a Home Wireless With DSL

How to Make a Home Wireless With DSL thumbnail
Wireless routers use radio waves to transmit and receive data.

At five or more times faster than traditional dial-up Internet, DSL Internet connections lend themselves well to sharing between multiple computers in the same home. Computers may be in different rooms of the house, particularly if they are laptops. Set up a wireless network to avoid the hassle of running long cables all around your house.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your DSL modem's power supply.

    • 2

Unplug the Ethernet cable connected to your DSL modem from the other device it is connected to (e.g., computer, wired router, etc.).

    • 3

Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your wireless router labeled "WAN," "WLAN" or "Internet." The router only has one of these labels.

    • 4

Plug the DSL modem and wireless router's power supplies into power outlets. Wait two minutes while the DSL modem reconnects to your Internet service provider's servers.

    • 5

Click on the wireless network reception icon on the Windows task bar at the bottom, right-hand corner of your screen. If you are using a Mac, the wireless network icon is in the top right-hand corner.

    • 6

Select your wireless network from the list and enter the password when requested. If you haven't set up your wireless network yet, most wireless routers create wireless networks named after their manufacturer. For example, a D-link wireless router creates a wireless network named "dlink." Default networks are not password protected.

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 on any computers you want to connect to the wireless network.

Tips & Warnings

  • Networks that are not password-protected can be used by anyone in your area. Consult the owner's manual that came with the wireless router on how to set up security on your wireless network.
