Becoming a Radiological Technician
-
1
Prepare for radiography school. The Bureau of Labor Statistics recommends that students interested in radiography should have taken high school classes in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. If you are out of high school and have not taken these classes, research adult education classes that can prepare you for radiography training.
-
2
Research online degree programs in radiography. An associate degree is the most common, but there are also programs that lead to a certificate or a bachelor's degree. Make sure the program you choose is fully accredited. Both the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART) accredit training programs in radiologic technology.

Enroll in your chosen program and complete your instruction. Make sure you can set aside time every day for your online coursework, and take special care to study the details of all the equipment you will use. If your program includes practical instruction in a clinic, be sure to take full advantage of it.

4
Pass your state's licensing board. Requirements vary by state, so research the specific procedures for where you live.
-
5
Earn your certification from the AART. This is voluntary but highly recommended. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that employers prefer AART certified radiology technicians.
