How to Obtain a Security License in Canada

Obtaining your security license in Canada requires that you submit fingerprints and a current criminal background check.

From working as a security guard to working internally for companies as a loss prevention investigator, having a security license in Canada opens the door to many different career opportunities. Obtaining your security license requires that you receive the appropriate education, possess a current and clean criminal background check and pay the required registration fee.

1. Research the requirements to obtain a security license in your province. Although the process to gain your security license in Canada is similar in each province, it does vary slightly depending on where you live. For example, in British Columbia there are different types of security licenses you can apply for with varying requirements for each. However in Ontario, there is one general security license.

2. Acquire the applicable education and experience. In most cases, you will be required to study a security program, police foundations or law enforcement program to qualify for your security license. Many provinces have community and career colleges that offer security-specific programs designed specifically for individuals applying for their security license. Before enrolling in a program, ensure that your province recognizes it as a qualifying course.

3. Apply for your provincial security guard license. Once you have obtained the appropriate education from an accredited institution, visit your provincial security licensing website. The license application can be downloaded and completed manually and in some cases, it can be completed and submitted online. Most provincial applications require proof of training or education, a criminal background check, fingerprints and a photo to be submitted with your application.

4. Pay your registration fee and send supporting documents to your provincial security licensing office. Once you have completed your application, you must pay the application fee and submit the additional certificates and documents by mail. You must include your criminal check, current passport style photo, fingerprints, proof of education and other licenses. For example, if you possess a license to use restraints, you may be required to submit proof of the license with your application.

5. Register with your provincial security association. Most provinces have a governing security association. Once you have received your security license, register with your provincial security association. This allows you to stay informed of career opportunities, new government legislation and current licensing requirements.

• Your security license does not automatically renew. You must apply for a renewal before your current license expires.
