How to Check for Broken Links on a Website
Broken links found on websites lead to frustration among visitors and will cause them to leave your site. When launching a new website, you should always check for broken links before your site goes live. Perform consistent maintenance on your site to catch any broken links. Use a browser add-on or a software program to make checking for broken links on your site a breeze. These will crawl the site much quicker than you can manually and will provide you with a report of broken links and the location so you can fix them.

1
Locate or download a software package that will check links on your website. Programs such as LinkChecker, LinkTiger and Inspyder InSite will crawl your website and give you a report of the broken link results. Some of these programs cost money, while others have an open source license.
-
2
Enter the URL of the website you wish to check for broken links and click "Go."
-
-
3
Wait for the software to crawl your entire site. This can take a few minutes, depending on whether it only checks links or it also has other features it will check for.
-
4
View your results once the program completes running. Some software packages--typically the ones you pay for--will give you a report that you can export and download to your computer. You will be able to see the broken link along with the location of it on your website.
-
5
Fix the broken links that were found on your website by going to your site administration and updating or removing the link.
