How to Play MP4 Files in Windows 2000
Moving Picture Experts Group-4 (MP4) files are video files that also contains an audio tracks and are imilar to other video and DVD files and found on the Internet and CD discs. Windows Media Player is capable of playing MP4 files on your Windows 2000 system, but a plug-in must be installed before the files can be played. The files are also playable on stand-alone programs available for your Windows 2000 system. MP4 programs are free, contain a user-friendly interface and available on the Internet.

Ace Divx Player

Open your computer's Internet browser and go to the "Ace Divx Player - Free Divx Player" (see Resources).

Click the "Download Ace Divx Player -- Free" button. Click "Run" or "Save As" when the "Opening dxplayer_setup.exe" dialog box opens. If clicking "Save As," navigate to the directory containing the "dxplayer_setup.exe" file and click on the file's name to start the installation process.

Click the down arrow below the heading "Select the language to use during the installation" and select your language. Click "OK."

Follow the on-screen prompts to install the program. Click "Install" and "Finish" when prompted. Ace Divx Player will launch automatically.

Click "Load" and navigate to the MP4 file you want to play. Click the file's name to select it then click "Open." The file will start playing in the box below the program's menu.
MP4 Player v4.0 - VLC

Open your computer's Internet browser and go to the "MP4 Player v4.0 -- VLC" (see Resources).

Click "Download." Click "Download Now" to begin the downloading process. Click "Run" or "Save As" when the "Opening VLC.exe" dialog box opens. If clicking "Save As," navigate to the directory containing the "VLC.exe" file and click on the file's name to start the installation process.

Follow the on-screen prompts to install the program. Click "Accept" and "Finish" when prompted. MP4 Player v4.0 - VLC will launch automatically.

Click "Media > Open." Navigate to and click on the MP4 file you want to play. Click "Play" to start playing the file in the box below the program's menu.

Open your computer's Internet browser and click "M4a/Flac/Ogg/Ape/Mpc Tag Support Plugin" (see Resources) if you already have Windows Media Player on your Windows 2000 system and you do not want to download a third-party player.

Click "Download." Click "Run" or "Save As" when the "Opening WMPTagSupport11.exe" dialog box opens. If clicking "Save As," navigate to the directory containing the "WMPTagSupport11.exe" file and click on the file's name to start the installation process.

Click "Next." Follow the on-screen prompts to install the plug-in. Click "Finish" when prompted.

Click "Start > All Programs > Windows Media Player."

Click "File > Open." Navigate to and click on the MP4 file you want to play, then click "Open." The file will being to play in Windows Media Player's screen.
