How to Optimize Wireless Internet

How to Optimize Wireless Internet thumbnail
Wireless connections remove the necessity for cables, but can suffer from unreliable signals.

Wireless Internet is a growing commodity, giving users across the world access to wireless networking and connections in their home as opposed to being restricted to workplaces or public areas. Wireless connections make it much easier to access your networks and the Internet from many locations, but since the signals aren't transmitted through cables, they run the risk of being affected by interference, can become chopping or intermittent, or even slow down if the signal is too weak. However, there are many steps you can take to properly optimize your wireless Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any devices from around your wireless modem or router that could cause interference, such as wireless phones. Such devices can interfere with your modem's signal and cause trouble when trying to get a strong connection.

    • 2

Move your modem or router away from objects that can block its signal, like furniture and walls. Place it on a stable, elevated surface like a desk so its signal can transmit over longer distance without being obstructed.

    • 3

Change your wireless channel by accessing the router's control panel through your web browser. Look for the wireless settings, then look for the channel you're using, which is usually a set of numbers followed by "GHz." Simply select a new channel, then save the changes. Your computers will automatically adjust, so there's no need to make any changes on them.

    • 4

Update your modem or router's firmware. In the device's control panel, look for any option to upgrade the firmware your device is using. If your firmware is up to date you will not need to do anything, but if there is an update available, there will generally be a notice of some kind on the main page. Firmware updates fix bugs and errors, and can sometimes boost performance.

    • 5

Purchase and install a wireless repeater in your home, placing it between your wireless device and your wireless computers. These devices register the incoming signal from your device, then boost it and send it out again, increasing the range and strength of your wireless network. These are especially useful when your computers are spread out, or if you have a large home with plenty of signal obstructions.
