Improve print performance of a HP 4050 laser printer by adding memory.

If you have an HP 4050 LaserJet printer, you can boost its performance by adding memory. Additional memory in your 4050 will increased performance by reducing the amount of time print jobs remain in the queue and reducing the load placed on the print spooler, which must read and write to your computer's hard drive before sending print information to the LaserJet.

Adding memory to a HP LaserJet 4050 printer is a simple task, and most people complete the memory installation within a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • 100-pin SDRAM DIMM Module (supports 4,8,16,32 and 64MB modules)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the printer off and remove the power cord from the electrical outlet. Disconnect the printer or network cable from the printer.

    • 2

Locate the access panel cover on the right side of the printer and near the back. The cover is located beside the printer and network connection ports. Pull the cover firmly toward the rear of the LaserJet 4050.

    • 3

Tilt the access cover panel out from the printer and remove it. Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to loosen the retaining screw that secures the DIMM slot access door. Open the lock latches on the DIMM module slot by pressing them outward.

    • 4

Remove the new DIMM memory module from the anti-static packaging. Be careful not to touch the gold or silver contact edges of the printer memory module and only hold the DIMM at the edges.

    • 5

Align the two notches on the DIMM module with those inside the memory slot. Insert the DIMM module into the memory slot. Place your thumbs on the back edge of the DIMM and firmly press the module into the slot.

    • 6

Secure the module in the slot by pressing the lock latches inward until they snap into place.

    • 7

Close the DIMM slot access door and tighten the retaining screw with the screwdriver. Set the bottom edge of the access panel cover into place by inserting the tabs at the bottom of the panel cover into the tab slots in the printer. Tilt the access panel cover upward and toward the printer.

    • 8

Slide the access panel cover toward the front of the printer until it snaps into place. Reconnect all cables and the power cord. Turn the printer on.

    • 9

Wait for the "Ready" message to display on the control panel. This indicates the memory installation was successful.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never attempt to install memory in a printer with the power cord inserted in an electrical outlet. You can seriously damage the printer and run the risk of electric shock.
