How to Install Additional Laptop RAM
Laptop computers are often sold with the minimum amount of RAM to run the operating system and perform basic functions. If your laptop seems sluggish, adding more RAM may help. Playing games and running multiple applications can slow a computer down considerably, especially with only the minimum amount of RAM installed. Upgrading RAM is an efficient way to boost performance. Adding RAM to your laptop can be a fairly easy, straight-forward process.

Purchase the appropriate size and type of RAM. RAM can be purchased at any computer hardware retailer. If you have an empty memory slot, you can buy an additional module to add to your existing RAM. Install the new RAM. Turn off your laptop, remove the battery and disconnect the power cord. Use of an anti-static wrist band is recommended. Locate and open the memory compartment door. It is usually located on the underside of your laptop. You will need a screw driver to open it. In some laptops, the memory compartment is located under the keyboard. Refer to your laptop's manual for instructions on opening the memory compartment. If you are replacing RAM, remove the old RAM by pressing the ejector clips located on the sides of the slot and pull the RAM module out. With the ejector clips open, install your new RAM module and press down until the module locks into place and the ejector clips close. If you are adding RAM, place the module into the empty slot.
