How to Build Gymnastic Rings

How to Build Gymnastic Rings thumbnail
Gymnastic rings help you work your upper body.

Gymnasts use gymnastic rings to perform a variety of moves that require their feet to be off the ground. If you are gymnast or if you would like to practice gymnastic exercises, you can build a set of gymnastic rings that can be installed on any suspension or pull-up bar. You can make the rings bigger or smaller than the ones explained here by simply cutting the PVC tubes to a longer, or shorter length. Just make sure they form a ring large enough for your hands.

Things You'll Need

  • Thick rope
  • 2 thick PVC tubes, 18 inches long
  • Tennis racket grip tape
  • String
  • 2 ratchet straps

Instructions

    • 1

Thread a length of thick rope through one of the PVC tubes until it comes out the other end.

    • 2

Pull the ends of the rope together and tie them together to form a secure ring. Knot the rope ends together with several overlapping knots to ensure a tight connection.

    • 3

Wrap the tube with tennis racket grip tape directly below the point where the knots are tied. The wrapped portion of the tube should be 5 inches long. This is where you will be able to grip onto the ring when using them.

    • 4

Make another ring in the same way you made the first one.

    • 5

Tie a loop of string around the knotted area of the first ring. The loop should be wide enough to allow the ratchet strap to fit through. Make another loop around the other ring in the same way. You need to be sure that the loops on both rings are the same length so that the rings hang evenly.

    • 6

Pass the loose end of one of the ratchet straps through the loop on the first ring and throw the ratchet fastener over the suspension bar.

    • 7

Feed the loose end of the strap through the ratchet fastener. Tighten the strap until the ring is at the height you want.

    • 8

Pass the other ratchet strap through the loop of the second ring. Hang the second ring from the bar in the same way. Make sure the rings are positioned how you want them to be.

    • 9

Insert a screw through the top of the strap with a power drill, securing it to the bar so it won't move. Do this for both straps.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can wrap the straps around the bar when you are not using them.

  • Do not install the gymnastic rings unless you have enough clearance to safely perform your moves.
