How to Burn a Program Onto a CD

How to Burn a Program Onto a CD thumbnail
Windows includes the tools to burn a program to a CD.

Although the installation files for programs are commonly downloaded over the Internet, not all computers have Internet access, and burning programs to optical media like CDs is often the easiest way to install applications. The Windows operating system includes the software necessary to burn a program to a blank CD without third-party applications. Most blank CDs have a maximum capacity of 700 MB, so programs that require more space than that may need to be burned to DVDs or moved to flash memory instead.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your blank CD into your computer's CD burner.

    • 2

Navigate to the folder that contains the program's installation file in Windows Explorer.

    • 3

Right-click on the program's installation file, move your cursor over "Send To:" and select your CD drive.

    • 4

Open "My Computer" and double-click on your CD drive.

    • 5

Select "Write to CD" from the "CD Writing Tasks" menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are copying the installation files from another CD, you may need to copy all of the files on the CD and paste them into a folder on your hard drive first.
